Most allergy tips talk about the whole house. But many people feel sick first in the bedroom. You sleep there many hours each day. Dust mites are a common trigger. They live in bedding. If you wake up with a stuffy nose and feel better away from home, clean your bedroom first.

The Mattress Is the Big One

Dust mites eat dead skin cells. They like warm, damp places. A mattress is warm and damp. They like it. A mattress without a cover can hold lots of mites after a few years. A washable mattress cover is an easy fix. It blocks the mites from you.

Wash Bedding Hot, Every Week

Heat kills mites. Soap does not. Wash your sheets and pillows in hot water, 130°F (54°C) or hotter, once a week. Cold or warm water cleans the cloth. It does not kill mites. Wash your pillows sometimes. Replace them when they get old.

Carpet vs. Hard Floors

Carpet holds dust, pet dander, and pollen. Vacuuming gets only part of it out. If symptoms are bad, hard flooring is the biggest change you can make. If you keep the carpet, use a vacuum with a HEPA filter. Go slowly and do the area under the bed.

Curtains and Blinds Collect Dust

Fabric curtains trap dust and pollen like carpet does. Most people forget to clean them. Our window and blinds cleaning guide tells you how often to clean them.

Clutter Holds Dust

Books, paper stacks, throw pillows, and storage boxes all collect dust. They are hard to clean around. A simple room without extra stuff is easier to keep clean.

Vents and Ceiling Fans

Vents and fan blades gather dust. The fan blows it around the room. They are high up, so people skip them. They are not on our cleaning list, so wipe them yourself.

How This Fits the Whole Home

The bedroom is just one part. Our allergy and asthma cleaning guide covers the whole house and the pollen season in Northern Virginia. If you can only clean one room, pick your bedroom.

How Often to Reset the Room

Wash bedding in hot water once a week. Vacuum often. Each season, also clean your mattress, curtains, vents, and sweep under furniture. If you need help, a deep clean starts at $210+ for a studio and costs more for bigger homes. The deep clean is a deeper scrub. Some appliances are cleaned inside and outside. But bedding, mattress care, and curtains are not included. You should do these yourself or ask the office about add-ons.
