Not every extra room in a Northern Virginia home is a home office or a guest bedroom. A growing number of Arlington and Ashburn homeowners have carved out a dedicated game room: a finished basement corner with a pool table, a wet bar with a dart board, a shelf of board games and a retro arcade cabinet, or a media nook built around a foosball table and a big-screen setup for game nights. These rooms get heavy, varied use, and they collect their own kind of mess.
If you’ve got a dedicated entertainment space at home, here is what needs attention and where our checklist stops.
Pool Tables: Felt, Rails, and the Floor Underneath
A pool table’s felt surface is not something a general house cleaner will brush, vacuum, or treat with any cleaning product, and that’s intentional. Felt holds chalk dust, and the wrong touch can flatten the nap or leave a residue that affects ball roll. We leave the playing surface itself alone. What we can do is wipe the rails and legs, where they are clear, and vacuum and mop the floor around the table. We don’t move a pool table, so the floor underneath it is not covered.
Chalk dust drifts onto nearby surfaces, so a room with a pool table can look dusty sooner than the rest of the house. Racks, wall mounts, and scoreboards are worth asking about before you book, since they are not on our standard checklist.
Arcade Cabinets and Electronics
Arcade cabinets, pinball machines, and gaming consoles are treated as electronics: we can wipe exterior surfaces, but we don’t open cabinets, touch internal wiring, or clean joysticks and buttons. Screens are best left to you if they are delicate.
Controllers, headsets, and cables are common culprits for grime buildup since they’re handled constantly with bare hands. We won’t rearrange cable management or unplug and replug components. If you have a specific way you like electronics handled (or not touched at all), that’s exactly the kind of note worth leaving for your cleaning team ahead of a visit.
Snack Stations, Mini Fridges, and Wet Bars
Game rooms often double as a snack and drink hub, which means crumbs in couch cushions, sticky rings on side tables, and a mini fridge that needs regular wipe-downs inside and out. Countertops and bar surfaces are wiped down as high-touch areas, and the exterior of a mini fridge or wine cooler is covered as an appliance exterior. The inside of a mini fridge is not on our standard checklist, and we don’t reorganize stocked shelves or handle glassware in use.
Seating, Rugs, and High-Traffic Wear
Game rooms tend to have heavier, more frequent foot traffic than a formal living room, especially if it’s the spot where kids, guests, and family gather most often. Floors in these rooms are vacuumed and mopped as part of a standard visit. Upholstery cleaning, including couches, bean bags, and gaming chairs, is not on our standard or deep checklist, so ask before you book if that is what you need.
Board Games and Shelving
Open shelving stacked with board games, card decks, and puzzle boxes accumulates dust along the tops and edges of boxes even if nothing’s been touched in weeks. Shelf dusting is not on our standard checklist, so ask us before you book if you want it. We won’t reorganize a collection or open boxes to clean game pieces.
What This Looks Like for Scheduling
A game room doesn’t change the standard cleaning checklist once we know what is off-limits (the felt, electronics internals, anything still stocked or in use). Standard starts at $135+ for a studio, $145+ for a 1BR, and $195+ for a 2BR. A deep cleaning ($210+, $220+, $270+) adds the inside of the oven, fridge, and microwave, not extra game room work.
It’s also worth flagging if you’re setting up a game room for the first time, say, after finishing a basement or converting an unused bonus room. A note about anything fragile or off-limits when you book avoids confusion later.
