Buying a house to fix up usually means it hasn’t been taken care of for years. This happens in Arlington or the wider Northern Virginia area. Between closing day and when contractors arrive, there’s a gap. A cleaning during this gap helps people see the space better. It also makes things nicer if you do some of the work yourself.
Why Clean Before Demo Instead of After
It might seem odd to clean a house before tearing into it, but it makes sense. Cleaning removes dirt and dust so you can see what’s underneath. You, contractors, and inspectors can spot water damage, worn floors, and problem areas. When a space is covered in old dust and buildup, it’s harder to plan the work.
What a Pre-Renovation Clean Can Cover
- Kitchens and bathrooms, which tend to carry the heaviest buildup from a previous owner’s day-to-day use
- Floors throughout the home, so contractors and anyone walking the property aren’t tracking through years of accumulated dust
- The inside of cabinets and drawers, which we include in a move-out style clean when the home is vacant
- High-touch areas wiped down, with trash removed
For a house with a lot of buildup, this is usually a deep clean, not a standard clean. A messy kitchen often needs the oven, fridge, and microwave cleaned inside. Window cleaning and other things cost extra.
What This Doesn’t Cover
We should be clear about what this includes. A pre-renovation clean is cleaning, not testing for mold, pests, asbestos, or other problems. If you think the house might have mold, pests, asbestos, or other issues, you need a licensed expert. Cleaning is not a replacement for that kind of inspection. We’ll point out anything that looks like it needs an expert’s look.
Why Contractors Often Prefer a Clean Starting Point
Cleaning before a project helps with more than just how it looks. You can see existing damage more easily. This is useful if you want to take photos or measure rooms. Taking photos for a designer or planning work is also nicer without lots of old dust.
How This Differs from Vacant Home Cleaning
This is similar to cleaning a vacant house between owners. But a fixer-upper usually has more dirt and neglect than a vacant house. Our article on cleaning tips for vacant homes between owners or tenants covers the general version. But older houses have special things to think about. Original fixtures and finishes need to be handled with care. We cover this in cleaning considerations for historic & older homes in Northern Virginia.
After the Work Is Done
When renovation is done, you’ll want a cleaning to deal with drywall dust and trash. It’s different from the pre-renovation clean because it’s cleaning up stuff from the work, not old dirt from years ago. Our post-renovation cleaning service covers that stage.
