Cold and flu season in Northern Virginia usually runs from late fall through early spring, and it shows up in your house before it shows up in a doctor’s office. Door handles get touched more. Kids leave tissues on the coffee table. Someone’s home sick for three days straight, and the downstairs starts to look worn. If you have a recurring cleaning with us, or you’re thinking about booking a one-time visit during this stretch of the year, it helps to know what a cleaning visit covers when illness is going around the house.
What a Cleaning Visit Can Realistically Help With
A professional house cleaning is not a substitute for the actual disinfecting protocols a household needs when someone is contagious, and we’re upfront about that. A visit wipes down high-touch areas and vacuums and mops floors, which helps with the everyday dirt that builds up when everyone is home more. That is ordinary cleaning, not a medical intervention. If you want the precise distinction between cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting, we cover it in detail in The Difference Between Sanitizing, Disinfecting, and Cleaning — worth a read before you decide what you actually need this time of year.
Spots That Get Touched the Most
During cold and flu months, a few spots in the house get touched more than usual. High-touch areas are wiped down as part of the standard checklist, and you can flag the ones that matter most to you:
- Kitchen and bathroom fixtures — faucet handles, cabinet pulls, and light switches near sinks get touched constantly when people are washing hands more often or reaching for medicine cabinets.
- Doorknobs and handrails — especially on stairs, since a sick household member moving between a bedroom and a bathroom will touch the same handrail several times a day.
- Remote controls, tablets, and shared electronics — these get handled constantly during a sick day on the couch and are easy to forget about between cleanings.
- Bedding and linens in a sick room — our visit does not include laundry. Nightstands and lamp switches are high-touch surfaces, so mention a sick room when you book.
- Entryways and mudrooms — kids tracking in from school, backpacks set down near the door, and general clutter that builds up when everyone’s routine is thrown off by illness.
None of this requires a different service tier. A note about which rooms had someone sick in them is useful, but it does not change the checklist.
Should You Upgrade to a Deep Clean During Flu Season?
Not necessarily. A deep clean is standard cleaning plus the inside of the oven, fridge, and microwave, so it fits when those need doing. Flu season on its own isn’t usually a reason to move from standard to deep. If you are deciding between weekly and biweekly visits, the shorter interval means high-touch areas are wiped more often; weekly takes 15% off and biweekly 10%. Standard starts at $135+ for a studio, $145+ for a 1BR, and $195+ for a 2BR; deep starts at $210+, $220+, and $270+. More detail is on our Arlington pricing page if you’re weighing the difference.
What to Tell Us Before a Visit
If someone in your home is currently sick, we appreciate a heads-up before the visit rather than after. If the household would rather not have a visitor while someone is contagious, call us as early as you can and we will talk through the schedule. A note when you book also works.
Seasonal Allergy Overlap
Cold and flu season in Northern Virginia often overlaps with the tail end of ragweed season and the start of indoor heating season, which brings its own dust and dry-air irritation. If allergies are part of what’s going on in your house on top of colds and flu, our post on Allergy & Asthma-Friendly House Cleaning for Northern Virginia’s Pollen and Humidity Season covers the dust, HVAC vent, and bedding considerations that tend to matter most once the heat kicks on.
Setting Realistic Expectations
We want to be straightforward about what a cleaning visit is and isn’t during this time of year. We are licensed and insured. A standard cleaning follows the checklist above. We can’t say a visit prevents illness from spreading, we don’t offer disinfection, and a visit does not take the place of the basic precautions — handwashing, isolating a sick family member when possible, laundering their linens separately — that actually make the biggest difference during an active illness at home.
If you’re on a recurring schedule with us and cold and flu season has you rethinking your frequency, or you just want to flag a room that needs extra attention next visit, let us know when you book. And if you’re not yet on a recurring plan and want to talk through what fits your household, give us a call at 571-350-0866. We serve Arlington and Ashburn, and the broader Northern Virginia area.
