People often ask what a move-out cleaning actually involves once the crew walks in. This post goes through a visit in the order it usually runs, based on the checklist we work from.
Before the Team Arrives: What the Home Should Look Like
A move-out clean is most effective on an empty or nearly empty home. Furniture and boxes left behind get in the way of the exact things a move-out clean is meant to cover — the floors, closets, and the spots where furniture used to sit. If belongings are still in the home, let your provider know in advance so expectations are set correctly on both sides.
Step 1: Walkthrough and Scope Confirmation
Before the work starts, the room count and any problem spots are confirmed, such as a stained oven or a bathroom with hard water buildup. If you want something outside the checklist, like a garage or basement, mention it when you book so it can be quoted as an add-on.
Step 2: Room by Room, Floors Last
Within each room the work moves from counters and wipe-downs toward the floor, so dust that falls from higher spots is not walked back over a clean floor.
Step 3: Kitchen — the Most Time-Intensive Room
The kitchen usually takes the longest in a move-out clean because it covers the most surface area and the most buildup: inside the oven, fridge, and microwave, inside the cabinets and drawers (the home is vacant, so they are empty), and the counters and appliance exteriors. A standard recurring clean does not include the inside of appliances.
Step 4: Bathrooms — Fixtures and Buildup
Bathrooms cover the tub, shower, toilet, sink, and mirrors, along with the cabinets and drawers. Hard water buildup and soap scum from a full lease term can be stubborn, and results vary with how heavy the buildup is.
Step 5: Bedrooms, Living Areas, and Closets
Empty bedrooms and living areas are wiped down at the high-touch points, and the floors are vacuumed and mopped. Closets with built-in drawers or shelving are included in the cabinets and drawers pass.
Step 6: Floors, Last
Floors are the final step throughout the home, vacuumed and mopped once the other work is finished.
Step 7: Trash
One bag of trash is taken out at the end of the visit.
What’s Different From a Standard Clean
The biggest differences are depth and scope: a standard clean maintains an already-lived-in home, while a move-out clean is for an empty home and adds the inside of the appliances plus the cabinets and drawers. Move-out cleaning starts at $285+ for a studio, scaling up with home size and condition. The scope is wider than a standard visit, so expect it to take longer than a routine recurring clean of the same size home.
